Microfinance and major changes in European economies

Name: Aparna B.
Undergraduate major field(s): Economics & French Studies
Goals for her Paris Field Study semester: Work in an economics based non-profit organization while becoming fluent in french
Placement: NGO for microfinance projects in Europe
Responsibilities as intern:
 Aid in preparation of annual microfinance conference in Madrid; coordinating workshops, editing reports, synthesizing conference minutes
 Manage organization’s newsletter; design layout, editing, writing articles
 Maintain organization’s website; updating current events, research and writing articles, translation of documents for publication
Subject of research: Microfinance as a Tool against Poverty and Social Exclusion: A comparison of France and Bosnia
And... Since IFE, Aparna has continued to work on social policy, first as a field researcher and social and economic policy intern for UNICEF, and now at the Center for the Study of Social Policy.

Investing in a cross-cultural professional experience

Name: Margarita C.
Undergraduate major field(s): Economics
Goals for her Field Study semester: “Improve my French and work in finance, seeing what it’s like to work in a fast-paced work environment.”
Placement: Investment firm specializing in SME’s
Responsibilities as intern:
 Collaborate with colleagues in analyses of markets and competing investment firms
 Compile data sheets on investment funds
 Research businesses undergoing voluntary liquidation and their long-term plans
 Update the firm’s database with information found in research
Subject of research: Due Diligence by French Investment Firms: A source of comparative advantage?
And… Margarita’s taste of economic analysis has grown into a career—she now works as an analyst for a major economic consulting firm.

Consolidating European banks and French research

Name: Anders J.
Undergraduate major field(s): French Language and Literature, Economics concentration
Goals for his Field Study semester: To learn about current French and European debates on economic and social issues and gauge the attitude within France towards US policy.
Placement: OFCE (French Institute for Economic Policy Analysis and Foresight)
Responsibilities as intern:
 Assist professional researcher using a range of sources to conduct research on banking consolidation in Europe.
 Attend doctoral-level seminars given by top French economists
 Audit economics courses at the Institute d’études Politiques
Subject of research: Banking and financial services consolidation in Europe
And… Anders’ research in the financial sector as well as his experience speaking French served him well as he has worked for Deutsche Bank as a bond trader working with large investors like central banks.

Delving into the heart of the European debt crisis from a European capital

Name: Inni Y.
Undergraduate major field(s): Political Theory & Economics
Goals for her Field Study semester: To put the skills learned in class to use in a real-life environment. To conduct a quantitative and qualitative analysis at the institution where she works while developing deeper insight into the economic crisis in Europe
Placement: Think tank and public interest lobby for European socio- economic affairs
Responsibilities as intern:
 Conduct research on European budget for the debates of the 2019-2020 budget underway
 Compare European budget and American federal budget, examining public and private financing options
 Complete various administrative tasks as well as translations to assist supervisor at think tank.
Subject of research: Debt and Instability: A reinterpretation of austerity and growth in the eurozone
And... Inni extended her internship over the summer and had the opportunity to travel to the Balkins to debate the topic of European integration with other European–focused students.

America v. Europe/ the Federal Reserve v. the European Central Bank

Name: Christine Z.
Undergraduate major field(s): French, Economics
Goals for her Field Study semester: "To expand my knowledge of macroeconomic issues, particularly monetary issues in the EU; to learn sufficient French economic vocabulary to write an economic report in French."
Placement: OFCE (French Institute for Economic Policy Analysis and Foresight)
Responsibilities as an intern:
 Conduct research on the economic policies of the European Central Bank, focusing on a comparison with the American Federal Reserve
 Collaborate with a professional researcher on a scientific article on the policies of the BCE (Christine’s name appeared on the article that was published.)
Subject of research: The European Central Bank and the Federal Reserve Bank: diverging policies in the face of the same international crisis?
And… Christine later worked for Deutsch Bank and is now getting her master’s degree in economics at Colombia University.
