Future educator takes a look at learning disabilities from a French perspective

Name: Anna R.
Undergraduate major field(s): Education, French
Goals for her Paris Field Study semester: To learn about French educational practices while gaining classroom experience.
Placement: A French elementary school
Responsibilities as intern:
 Aiding principal teacher of a large elementary school class, taking responsibility for half of the students at a time
 Managing a pen-pal project with a school in Chicago, helping students with their correspondence in English.
 Assistant teaching courses in English and Computer Science
Subject of research: Issues in Tutoring Students With Learning Disabilities and Behavioral Difficulties in a French Elementary School
And... Thanks to her experience in her internship, Anna received a placement student teaching at her college’s campus school.

Sociology major helps NGO that helps struggling students

Name: Frances K.
Undergraduate major field(s): Sociology, Anthropology, Education
Goals for her Paris Field Study semester: To be embedded in the current state of French educational affairs and learn more about educational policies addressing issues of cultural and linguistic diversity. 

Placement: Large not-for-profit organizational of university students helping pupils in difficulty
Responsibilities as intern:
 Helping to organize a nation-wide solidarity festival in 60 towns across France ( coordination, working on the website, communications)
 Assisting with a photo-shoot for the next recruitment campaign, and with a questionnaire study on one of the college targeted in the new campaign.
 Maintaining contact with other non-profits
 Participating in the creation of the newspaper “Vonlontaires”
Subject of research: How Association Students Provide School Support to Recently Arrived Immigrant Children 

And... After graduation Frances participated in the founding of an NGO that uses video with disadvantaged urban youth.

Analyzing policy and assisting students in a priority education zone

Name: Stephen Z.
Undergraduate major field(s): Mathematics and French
Goals for his Field Study semester: To become familiar with the French school system, both from a financial as well as educational perspective.
Placement: French middle school in a ZEP (priority education zone)
Responsibilities as intern:
 Aid math teacher, assisting students with exercises
 Conduct English speaking seminars for students in grades 6-9
 Assist hearing-impaired students with English language skills
 Help with organizational work, learning about the administration of a ZEP school
Subject of research: The policy of priority education zones; a study of the college Guy Moquet
And... Stephen now works as a quantitative research analyst at an independent asset management firm.

The art of museum education at the Paris children’s museum

Name: Carolyn S.
Undergraduate major field(s): French, Art History
Goals for her Field Study semester: To intern in a museum, gaining experience to further her goals to get a master’s degree in Museum Studies and work as a museum educator.
Placement: The Paris children’s museum
Responsibilities as intern:
 Observe and become familiarized with the current museum exhibition
 Lead individuals and groups on visits through the museum
 Prepare and run art-making workshops for children
 Translation work in preparation for the next exhibition
Subject of research: The Paris Children’s Museum: A necessary sacrilege
And... After IFE Carolyn accomplished her goal of earning a master’s degree in museum studies and now works teaching children at the National Building Museum in Washington DC.
